Improving website accessibility and digital inclusion for QA Higher Education using Acquia Optimize and Recite Me — driving better compliance, UX, and accessibility scores.
Project Overview:
In January 2022, while working as a Website Executive at QA Higher Education, I led a project to significantly improve the accessibility, compliance, and user experience of QA Higher Education’s websites. This initiative aimed to make digital experiences more inclusive for diverse audiences, including individuals with disabilities.
We used two main tools to drive success:
Acquia Optimize – for accessibility tracking, reporting, and actionable insights.
Recite Me – for providing users with customisable on-site accessibility tools, such as screen readers, font adjustments, and colour contrast controls.
The success of this project led to two published case studies by our partners:
The Challenge:
The QA Higher Education websites were facing:
Accessibility issues that limited usability for students with disabilities.
Low compliance scores impacting QA’s ability to meet digital accessibility regulations.
User experience challenges affecting ease of navigation and engagement.
Our goal was to create accessible, compliant, and user-friendly websites that supported QA’s mission to provide inclusive learning environments.
The Approach:
I collaborated with internal stakeholders and external accessibility providers to:
1. Audit & Identify Issues:
Used Acquia Optimize to conduct deep audits, identifying key accessibility barriers.
Created a prioritised action plan to resolve high-impact issues.
2. Implement Assistive Tools:
Added the Recite Me toolbar across QA Higher Education websites, enabling:
Screen reading functionality.
Adjustable text sizes and colours.
Translation tools and other user customisations.
3. Cross-Team Collaboration:
Worked with content, development, and compliance teams to ensure accessibility fixes were implemented site-wide.
Ensured alignment with WCAG guidelines and QA’s digital inclusion objectives.
4. Continuous Monitoring:
Set up recurring accessibility scans using Acquia Optimize.
Developed workflows for ongoing issue resolution and quality assurance.
Execution Highlights:
Accessibility audits performed using Acquia Optimize with measurable results.
Recite Me integration across the site, allowing customisable accessibility options for users.
Established ongoing monitoring workflows to maintain accessibility standards.
Collaborated with multiple teams to ensure accessibility fixes aligned with business goals.
Featured in case studies by both Acquia and Recite Me for project success.
